Special Harvest Licences

Walleye Class A (>50 cm) and Class B (43-50 cm) licences are transitioning out of the application and draw process and - just like Class C licences (<43cm) - will now be available for direct purchase on a first-come, first-served basis, until waterbody and/or Class quotas are reached.

There are no changes to how SHLs are allocated at designated waterbodies, only changes to how Class A and Class B tags are administered.

These administrative program changes aim to reduce complexity, increase flexibility and improve angler access to SHLs while maintaining limited harvest opportunities at designated lakes.

To purchase a Special Harvest Licence, you must be an Alberta resident with a valid Wildlife Identification Number (win). A valid Alberta Resident Sportfishing Licence is also required, unless you are exempt (such as anglers under 16 or Alberta residents 65 and older).

Anglers may purchase up to six SHLs, for a maximum of twelve tags. This limit applies regardless of licence class or waterbody, and is subject to each waterbody's available quota. Any combination of Class and waterbodies is permitted.

The maximum possession limit for walleye is 12 when harvested under a SHL, combined with an annual sportfishing licence. For anglers without a SHL, an annual sportfishing licence is required, maximum possession of walleye remains at 3 and waterbody-specific regulations apply.

The process to purchase walleye Class A and Class B SHLs is changing - if you want to purchase a Class A or Class B SHL, you will no longer need to purchase and submit draw applications. Beginning April 28, 2026, at 9:00 AM, all classes of SHLs will be available online at AlbertaRELM.com or through licence issuers on a first-come, first-served basis.

Prior to purchasing online, users must have pre-numbered Government of Alberta adhesive paper tags ready to complete the purchase. Tags can be picked up at Fish & Wildlife Offices, Licence Issuers or ordered online and through the AlbertaRELM app.

The electronic tag pilot remains paused while legislation related to inspection and use of personal electronic devices for enforcement is reviewed. Further updates on e-tagging will be shared when available.

The application and draw system will be terminated for Class A and B licences as of March 31, 2026. Any accumulated or unused priority points will expire on March 31, 2026.
